39 Believed to have taken its name from the large pieces of wood used to stop cows falling into what was once a pond opposite the pub, the Wooden Fender has been in business since 1625. It is said that Matthew Hopkins, known as the 'Witchfinder General', held meetings around the Wooden Fender's open log fire to discuss allegations of witchcraft against local women. Thankfully, modernday landlords Karl and Alison are the complete opposite, giving a warm and hospitable welcome to all who venture through the historic doors.

This wonderfully traditional pub simply oozes character. The warm and relaxing atmosphere bodes well for those looking for respite from the cold winter air, while the comprehensive array of drinks at the bar provides the ultimate refreshment in the summer.

The à la carte menu offers fresh home-cooked food with a broad selection of menu options. From the sea, there is whole baked sea bass, fillet of salmon and mussels; from the land, tender lamb shank, chicken tagliatelle and breast of duck. To suit every appetite, there is also a selection of smaller meals, baguettes, sharers and salads - the warm Camembert salad is a winner.

One of those rare establishments that quite simply has it all, the Wooden Fender is guaranteed to impress
