Laying claim to being Britain’s oldest pub, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks is an a age-old place with plenty of stories of tell. Built in the 11th century, the pub was supposedly a popular watering hole for monks, who used to sneak into the pub through tunnels connecting the beer cellar to the original St Albans Cathedral grounds opposite the pub. Oliver Cromwell is also rumoured to have stayed the night at the inn during the Civil War.

Inside you’ll find low ceilings, an open fire, dark oak beams and an original breadmaking oven, creating a charming traditional English pub atmosphere. Since its humble beginnings, the pub has been serving up classic British fare to the locals of St Albans, and today, the chefs continue to delight diners with delicious food. On the menu you’ll find a great array of popular British dishes crafted with contemporary flair, including homemade fishcakes, beer-battered fresh hake and hand-cut chips, and homemade sausages served with mashed potato, caramelised onion and jus. The pub is renowned for its Sunday roast, and it’s easy to see why with offerings such as slow-roasted duck with cranberry sauce, saddle of Lancashire beef with horseradish, and belly of Dingle Dell pork with apple sauce and crackling. Ye Olde Fighting Cocks also holds a regular and popular quiz night every Wednesday and can be booked for private events, just get in touch with the team to find out more.
