In a world of high-street branding, this independent restaurant offers the kind of food and service you may have given up hope of fi nding outside of London’s top restaurants. Tucked away behind St Albans’ busy high street, Freddie’s has been serving delicious modern European cuisine to legions of regular customers for 15 years. The glowing customer testimonials have helped secure a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence every year since 2012.
Professional and friendly service is part of the Freddie’s DNA, as is a passionate belief in sourcing quality ingredients, so the restaurant’s owner still visits Smithfield and Billingsgate himself to secure the freshest, tastiest seasonal produce. The à la carte menu introduces Mediterranean flavours to an original selection of dishes. Starters include baby squid with Spanish tortilla, crispy pancetta and pine nut dressing while mains include a tempting range of fish and shellfish as well as beautifully cooked beef fillet with horseradish and garlic butter on truffle-oil mash and an extensive vegetarian menu. Two-course set lunch and weekday dinner menus are great value at £14.50 and £19.95 respectively, and the three-course Sunday lunch for £19.95 is, unsurprisingly, a weekly highlight. An expertly picked wine list complements the food and there is a great range of cocktails and liqueur coffees to enjoy.
Extensive refurbishment in 2015 has brought contemporary new styling to Freddie’s, with the welcome addition of huge sliding doors meaning guests can enjoy al fresco Mediterranean dining in the summer months.
