Arriving at this beautiful 17th-Century coaching Inn - the oldest in Rutland - we were happy to see that our table was next to a lovely roaring log fire. My partner and I were offered two menus - the bar menu with lighter dishes and snacks and the main menu. We opted for the latter.

We were certainly spoilt for choice, and the dishes were presented with panache and precision. After much deliberation I finally went for the scallops with pea purée to start, while my companion chose the locally shot pigeon. My scallops were a culinary work of art, sweet and succulent, and the purée was a perfect accompaniment. The pigeon was cooked perfectly pink and the creamy mushroom sauce and potatoes complemented the dish well.

The main course presented a much harder choice, and after rejecting the tempting guinea fowl, fillet of beef, and the steak special, I plumped for the loin of venison on a bed of lentils. This again was cooked with skill, the meat blushing pink. My partner went for the local saddle of lamb on a bean and bacon cassoulet - the combination of soft, succulent meat, rosemary and just a touch of fat was a winner.

Pudding, we were told, was the chef's speciality, and I went for baked figs with cardamom and clotted cream; the other dish was a warm treacle tart with homemade honeycomb ice cream. The silence as we ate confirmed that both were a triumph. The head chef, Ian Kenbury, was not on duty the night we visited, but his 23-year-old protégée Michael Prescott, who is a master chef in the making and showed maturity beyond his years with the execution of the dishes, was - definitely a name to keep an eye out for. A gem of a pub and one I hope to visit again
