Known as the Wentworth of the North, the village of Linton is graced with beautiful homes accompanied by immaculate manicured gardens, and at the centre of village life is the charming Windmill Inn. Located minutes from the A1 and Wetherby town centre, a large car park makes arrival easy.

Frequented by the well-heeled locals, prices are modest and it was no surprise that the intimate bar of this warm, friendly and affordable inn was already busy, filled with laughter and the sounds of people enjoying themselves. From the daily specials menu my guest requested the buffalo mozzarella, tomato and rocket salad with balsamic dressing to start; fresh and tasty, it was a delight to the eye and declared 'brilliant'.

This was followed by a smoked hake fillet baked in a shallow bath of milk with crushed basil potatoes and peas - la française. My usually reserved guest was enlivened by the virtues of the hake fillet - the word 'superb' was mentioned several times. I chose the Cajun-spiced king prawns served with a mint yoghurt, followed by roasted duck breast with some exceptionally good Dauphinois potatoes, served with a wild mushroom cream sauce. It was all an absolute pleasure to eat, and next time I will remember to order a double helping of Dauphinois.

I consulted our friendly waiter when choosing wine to match our food, and 'something red and light' was suggested. The Georges Duboeuf Cuvée Rouge was indeed the perfect complement - a medium-bodied, soft and mellow, reasonably priced wine. Wanting to continue the pleasure of eating here a little longer, we selected apple pie with custard and treacle tart with cream for dessert.

The service at The Windmill Inn is top-notch, the atmosphere pleasantly informal and the food cooked by a chef with a talent that will bring diners back time and time again. It's not fancy, but it's delicious and fantastic value for money.
