The Carpenters Arms
Run by award-winning restaurateurs Richard and Heather Hurley, this fantastic pub and restaurant has featured in The Good Pub Guide multiple years in a row. Not only has it earned a place in the top ten best-value pubs in the country, but it has also received a recommendation in The Good Pub Guide , scooped CAMRA’s Rural LocAle Pub of the Year award, and has appeared in AA’s The Pub Guide since 2014, and Sawday’s since 2015. Conveniently situated close to Cambridge and Newmarket and just a few minutes from the A11, M11 and A14, The Carpenters Arms attracts both local diners and those from further afield.
Cask ales served include Crafty Beers, which were brewed on-site until recently, and the carefully selected wine comes from France and beyond. Heather uses the herbs and vegetables she is currently growing in her greenhouse in her award-winning cuisine. The seasonally changing menu features traditional English pub fare, such as beef and Carpenters’ cask ale pie with hand-cut, triple-cooked chips, as well as fine French-inspired cuisine such as cassoulet and tartiflette. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are always available, and the team is happy to cater for those with special dietary requirements. Sea bass and salmon en papillote with prawns, mussels and rich saffron sauce is a popular choice, and slow-roasted cider pork belly served with sage mash and braised red cabbage is equally enjoyable, particularly when followed by one of Heather’s indulgent desserts. Whether you pick the crema Catalana, sablé Breton (Breton shortcake), or the traditional apple and blackberry crumble with custard, it will be a delectable way to round off your meal.
