My partner and I entered the Barnes establishment on a typically thriving evening and instantly felt at home. There's an inherent cosiness about the place, achieved by exposed brick walls, wood-hewn tables and fairy lights on the decking. I started with the Dorset crab verrine with avocado and toasted sourdough, while my partner chose the baked duck egg with spinach and field mushrooms. The verrine in particular was excellent; fresh and aromatic, it combined delicious flavours to exquisite effect. Mains were equally divine: my panfried hake with steamed clams was succulent and utterly satisfying, and my partner's grilled bavette steak was ideally complemented by rustic chips and lip-smacking horseradish butter. It was with clear consciences that we tucked in, for The Tree House uses only free-range poultry and the fish comes from sustainable sources. Ethical, stylish, flavoursome food served in a rustic-chic setting. What more could you ask for? Barnes
