From the outset, this 16th-century traditional inn is the epitome of a true countryside pub. The charming thatched roof, hanging flower baskets and white-washed walls look pretty as a picture, hinting at the charm inside. The comfortable, cosy interiors make it all too easy to want to stay awhile.

This family-run pub puts its guests at the forefront, whether that’s making sure visitors have a good night’s sleep in one of the ten letting rooms adjacent to the pub or are enjoying their home-cooked meal. The team also prides itself on providing a wide range of drinks. The customer-centric service is spot on – the owners are always available, getting to know their guests and ensuring their visit runs smoothly. Like the interior, tradition reigns on the menu, with the likes of the Boxworth burger lamb’s liver, bacon and onion with mash, and steak and ale pie on offer. Homemade soup and a seasonal crumble are always available, and the lunch offering includes baguettes, salads and ploughman’s, while the specials board varies depending on what takes the owner’s fancy and what’s in stock at the local butcher. Top dessert choices include sticky toffee pudding, brioche bread and butter pudding and raspberry cheesecake. The chef is happy to cater to specific dietary requirements – a vegan red chickpea curry features on the à la carte menu. The patio and garden at the back calls for laid-back afternoons sipping ale and tucking into great food while soaking up the sun.
