This fantastic eatery dedicates its name to the B-17 Memphis Belle aircraft, which was located in Bassingbourn during World War II. Inside, the pub is cosy and contemporary with nods to its namesake in the form of nostalgic photographs and memorabilia. A wood-burning stove crackled away as we entered on a chilly February evening. We were soon to realise that The Belle’s story doesn’t end with the Memphis Belle – the food is in a league of it’s own. Menus are tempting and everything is made in-house using local and artisan produce. Our starters comprised a spiced mixed bean samosa with lime yoghurt dressing, and crispy squid and chorizo with chilli oil. We were tempted by a number of main-course dishes. Calf’s liver and braised ox cheek served with buttered Savoy cabbage and bacon promised a rich and warming dish, while the variety of homemade burgers appealed for the choice of toppings on offer.

Eventually, I plumped for a quintessentially British dish: fish and chips. The fish was top-quality and it proved to be a classic dish executed perfectly. My companion opted for a juicy, melt-in-the-mouth sirloin steak served with salad. The ingredients are sourced from nearby and the team cares about provenance and flavour.

Dessert saw orange crème brûlée with homemade shortbread and peanut butter parfait with salted caramel sauce – delicious. An extensive wine list along with fixed-price menus and a board of ever-changing specials means there is something for everyone. As if head chef Michael Kirby’s innovative dishes aren’t enough, chef Damian Wawrzyniak, who has worked with TV’s Mart Berry and Jamie Oliver, will soon join the team to advise on a creative new menu.
