The Anchor is a gem of a gastropub, hidden away in the Dunstable Downs. Since being a 2011 MasterChef: The Professionals finalist, Steve has made a big name for himself – discerning diners should grab a table at The Anchor before the word spreads too far.

The menu is sophisticated and stylish. We started with a hen’s egg with Jerusalem artichoke purée, which was a delight of flavour and texture, and then moved onto a ballotine of chicken, served with mushroom mousse, pickled wild mushrooms, tarragon mayonnaise and puff pastry. Our main courses – juicy bavette steak, and meltingly tender braised ox cheeks – were just as good. The accompanying onions, prepared five ways, added crunch and depth. The portions were perfectly sized to deliver full flavour and satisfaction, but left just enough room for dessert. I plumped for the tiramisu, while my companion went for a playful version of rhubarb and custard. The à la carte menu is varied and interesting, changing regularly so that chef Steve can showcase the freshest seasonal ingredients he can find. He gets daily deliveries and can proudly cite the provenance of every item on the menu. Every so often, Steve offers five- and seven-course tasting menus, which are the best way to experience his culinary expertise.

If you’re looking for something more casual, perhaps for a lunchtime visit, the seasonal pie menu is the perfect find, though The Anchor also boasts plenty of hearty sandwiches. So whether you fancy fine gastropub cuisine or a relaxed mid-week meal, The Anchor has something for everyone.
