Studham is the southern-most village in Bedfordshire, where you’ll find the highest-lying pub, The Bell. This haven is just ten minutes from Dunstable and Hemel Hempstead and five minutes from the Dunstable Downs and Whipsnade Zoo. Over the years, this Grade II listed pub has won numerous awards including Best Pub in Bedfordshire at the 2018 National Pub & Bar Awards and the SME Luton & Bedfordshire Business Awards. For four consecutive years, The Bell has also been the winner of Best Hospitality Venue at the Dunstable & Houghton Regis Business Awards. With panoramic views, large gardens overlooking the common and nooks and crannies full of character, The Bell is the place to be come rain or shine.
‘Providing food and gifts we love’ is the pub’s motto and the team constantly strives to provide a warm welcome and ensures every customer’s needs are met. On the menu are homemade pies, Sunday roasts with all the trimmings, freshly beer-battered cod and chips and fresh dough pizzas – to eat in or takeaway – as well as authentic pasta dishes and weekly changing specials. As all dishes are freshly prepared, the chef can also create delicious gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan alternatives.
My dining partner took advantage of the specials menu, choosing the slow-braised pork hock. The succulent meat fell of the bone and was served with roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes and spectacular apple and cider jus. I opted for the pie of the day – a simple mix of Lincolnshire sausage, smoked mature cheese and beans, which proved a nostalgic classic, epitomising winter comfort food. You’ll find highly recommended wine alongside local ale, and all around the pub there’s a selection of gifts and goodies to buy including clocks, signs, candles, fudge, jam, chutney and more.
After a walk with your four-legged friend, you’re welcome to pop into the study bar, where your pooch will find their own Bell & Hound menu. Whether you’re after a cup of coffee, a lazy lunch or an evening of dining and celebrating, The Bell is there to welcome you.
