Hayden's Restaurant and Sophie's Tea Room are set within a fascinating watermill and garden-centre complex, complete with its own Dickensian shopping village which houses Hayden's Farm Shop and Café. The two main eateries are located together on the first floor, so we were able to browse in the boutiquestyle shops, farm shop and garden centre along the way.

Hayden's Restaurant itself is modern, bright and welcoming, with a popular sunny terrace. It offers a wide selection of delicious homemade hot and cold favourites, breakfasts, lunches, snacks, cakes and desserts, as well as a special Sunday carvery. It was full when we arrived, and it soon became clear why. Restaurant owner Marcus Hayden is a head chef with many years of experience, and together with his team of talented young chefs he is producing delicious food worth travelling for.

My companion chose a hearty homemade steak and ale pie, which was packed full of tender beef in a rich gravy, with a light puff pastry; it arrived accompanied by perfectly cooked fresh local vegetables. He was also delighted by the selection of traditional English desserts on offer, which included favourites such as sherry trifle and sticky toffee pudding. Adjacent to the restaurant, Sophie's Tea Room is Victorian in style and serves traditional and speciality breakfasts all morning, including hard-to-find eggs Benedict, kippers and smoked haddock, as well as delicious high teas and cream teas during the afternoon. As we visited mid afternoon, I decided to try their fabulous high tea, which arrived beautifully presented on a three-tier cake stand complete with delicate sandwiches, delicious homemade cakes, scones, clotted cream and preserves. The set tea was faultless, and many guests in the main restaurant stopped in awe to admire it.

The food at Hayden's was excellent and very reasonably priced, while the ambience was welcoming and unpretentious. With three venues to choose from, including the popular Farm Shop Café (which serves coffee, cake and ice cream) the visitor is positively spoilt for choice. My advice? Visit Hayden's soon.
