For many, Turkish food is all too often only experienced from a takeaway venue after a night out. While the food may be satisfying in that context, it doesn’t tend to capture the real heart and soul of genuine Turkish food, served in authentic Turkish surrounds.

Fortunately for those in Peterborough, Turkish Kitchen is the perfect example of a true Turkish establishment. With some fantastic art on the walls and food made with love, it is a mesmerising restaurant. Even the beer and wine are Turkish, which was a very pleasant surprise when we visited. The kitchen staff and management are also Turkish, so we were able to enjoy an entirely genuine Turkish dining experience, without having to board a plane.

Our night started with an appetiser of hummus, notably made from scratch on-site, and some falafels with a range of amazing dips including smooth cacik made from strained yoghurt. The falafels were beautifully seasoned and full of flavour.

For my main course, I chose the leg of lamb braised in a rich tomato-based sauce with rice and seasoned vegetables. The meat was sumptuously tender, practically falling off the bone, and the side salad was sweet thanks to its pomegranate drizzle. The vegetables were cooked in the same pan as the lamb, so they took on the flavour and richness of the meat. My friend’s dish of kofte was juicy, accompanied by chunks of lamb that was cooked to perfection – the tangy flavour and smoky grilled texture made for an impressive main course. This came with the same tasty side salad and was served attractively on a bed of rice.

For dessert, we shared soft and fluffy chocolate and caramel sponge with chocolate sauce and a bowl of ice cream on the side, which gave us a smooth and sweet ending to what was a hearty and delicious meal. Short of a trip to Turkey, this meal is as close to the real thing as I’ve tasted.
