Hitchin residents Mark and Nicky Craven took over The Radcliffe in spring 2015 with the aim of providing a high-end dining experience for fellow locals, and they and their fantastic team are doing just that, serving seasonally changing, locally sourced food that is all lovingly prepared on the premises by their experienced chef.
Excellent choices from The Radcliffe’s current menu include rabbit and pork pâté followed by haunch of venison with poivrade sauce, mashed potato, roasted apple and carrots. Also highly recommended is the fillet steak with handmade chips, roasted cherry tomatoes, flat-cap mushrooms and salad garnish. Saving space for pudding is a must. The ice creams and sorbets are all homemade and include unusual flavours such as honey malt ice cream and blackberry sorbet. If you have space for something more substantial, the chocolate truffle mousse is to die for. Drinks include local real ales from Buntingford Brewery and the award-winning raspberry Pinkster Gin from Royston, just up the road. The well-chosen list of wines is more international, and in the 2015 ‘31 Days of Riesling’ competition The Radcliffe came second in the country after Gordon Ramsay.
As well as delicious food and excellent wine, the pub boasts surroundings that are both welcoming and classy, with funky bespoke wallpaper created by a local artist. It’s no wonder that The Radcliffe is already listed in the Michelin Guide. Further accolades are sure to follow.
