This family-run pub is located in Woodham Mortimer, between Maldon and Danbury, and brings a sense of fun to pub dining. The charismatic team serves home-cooked food made using local produce along with an excellent range of beer, ale and wine. Previously named Maldon & Dengie CAMRA’s Pub of the Year, The Hurdlemakers offers an unbeatable selection of local real ale.
The main menu offers a mix of classic pub grub and more adventurous dishes that showcase the chef’s flair. You might start, for example, with the crispy duck salad with warm plum and hoisin sauce or the mussel and clam chowder and follow with an expertly grilled steak or tender slow-braised lamb shank in rich red wine sauce. If you fancy something a bit lighter, baguettes, jacket potatoes, salads and panini are available alongside a classic ploughman’s lunch. The team ably caters for dietary requirements and even offers a separate menu that’s low in gluten.
The pub’s expansive beer garden is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxed pint in the sunshine and let the kids wear themselves out. In summer, the team fires up the barbecue. The Hurdlemakers Arms also hosts special events throughout the year, with a dedicated marquee available in summer and a separate barn that seats 25 to 30 guests. The Hurdlemakers also hosts a fantastic beer festival during the last weekend of June.
