The Hurdlemakers Arms in Woodham Mortimer was recently voted the Maldon and Dengie CAMRA Pub of the Year, and with its excellent selection of beer, ales and wine, as well as delicious home-cooked food, it's easy to see why. The pub's countryside setting makes this an ideal rural retreat, whether you're in search of a quiet drink or some of the best pub food the area has to offer. The atmosphere is welcoming and homely, while the menu, which features a host of hearty British fare, has been compiled with great care. Each dish is created using ingredients from the local region, and some of the firm favourites include delicious garlic and Stilton mushrooms, fresh battered cod and chips, the chef's own pie of the day and rabbit casserole. Indulgent desserts include homemade strawberry Pavlova with juicy strawberries, strawberry ice cream and fresh cream and a very rich treacle sponge pudding.

The Hurdlemakers Arms can cater for all occasions: the large marquee can accommodate up to 100 guests for weddings, christenings and other events, while the small function room is ideal for family gatherings of up to 25. The annual beer festival, held in the last weekend in June, is one of the most popular events in the region, sporting a selection of over 30 real ales and ciders, all of which are sourced locally. In addition to fantastic drink, home-cooked food is served all weekend; there's even a barbecue in the large beer garden. Like the pub itself, the festival is family-friendly, with plenty going on to keep the little ones entertained
