As you might guess from its name, this charming pub sits delightfully close to the water - and offers the warmest welcome to all who visit (including the occasional sailor). Owners Ruth and Mike provide traditional home-cooked cuisine, using produce from local suppliers. There is a small car park at the rear, with additional on-street parking available in the evenings and at weekends, and The Welcome Sailor is certainly worth the drive.

Running a small, friendly local pub, staff believe there are no strangers here - only friends they haven't met yet. You might find Ruth in the kitchen, up to her elbows in pie pastry, and Mike tending the garden or tinkering away at the piano. Those pies are another reason to come here - try the homemade beef and onion pie served with mash and delicious fresh veg - a hearty feast. The rest of the menu is equally tempting, with a variety of fillings for sandwiches, baguettes and jacket potatoes (all around the £3 or £4 mark), as well as a selection of mouth-watering main meals. Options are traditional and delicious; including scampi, chips and peas, and chicken curry with rice or chips (both £6.45). There is fresh fish available too, as well as a selection of heavenly desserts. All this can be enjoyed in the lovely beer garden when the weather is warm, with views of the water, and The Welcome Sailor offers great live music, quiz nights and karaoke.
