Ferry Road, North Fambridge, CM3 6LR
With a welcoming facade and rumours of a resident poltergeist, The Ferry Boat Inn is a genuine gem of a public house. The pub owners are sensitive to the history of the building and undertook a fine restoration of the conservatory and restaurant. It's impossible to avoid being charmed by the wooden beams, low ceilings and the resultant cosy atmosphere of the pub.

Despite dating back more than 500 years, the pub maintains its youthful glow thanks, in large part, to the talented kitchen team who continue to draw in a crowd. Sharing the charcuterie board of Italian cured meats, olives, sundried tomatoes, hummus and warm flatbread is a great way to start proceedings. Move on to main courses like Whitby scampi and hand-cut chips, or mushroom ravioli smothered in creamy sauce.

Why not stay away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a little longer and book an overnight visit in one of the suites? It's hard to pass up the chance of a Continental breakfast in bed the following morning.

Guests struck by wanderlust will appreciate the surrounding network of footpaths and accessible country lanes, which include a riverside walk along the Crouch estuary. Such walks offer the chance to spot canal boats and birdlife while enjoying the undisturbed calm of the water, before heading back to The Ferry Boat Inn for a relaxing pint
