The Quayside café and restaurant is situated on the waterfront, overlooking a peaceful stretch of the River Crouch and a fleet of moored sailboats. From the restaurant space, diners enjoy a grandstand view of the sailing activity, and the al fresco seating area is ideal for fine weather. The breakfast menu caters for vegetarians, the lunch menu serves a variety of sandwiches, jacket potatoes and a superb ploughman’s platter, and the new license means that an evening menu including a tapas selection and list of specials has been introduced. Afternoon tea is served with all the trimmings, comprising traditional scones, cream, jams, petits fours, sandwiches, and homemade cakes that are made locally.

We visited for lunch, dining out under a parasol, and chose dishes from the specials board. I relished a flavoursome dish of chicken and chorizo with aromatic saffron rice, while my partner had a lovely dressed Cromer crab beside a generous fresh salad. For dessert, we enjoyed warm apple crumble topped with cream. The restaurant was very busy, yet service was speedy and remained relaxed and friendly.

At The Quayside, leisure and relaxation is key. Visit for a tranquil breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea overlooking the panorama of the river.
