As we entered the Old Riverview Guest House & Tea Rooms, the welcoming atmosphere was the first in a long list of things to impress. Graham and his staff were quick to greet us, their genuine conviviality aiding the creation of a cosy feel in this most traditional of settings.

First things first, and the signature tea menu had our attention. We were soon sipping rich Assam tea and the light, gentle Darjeeling tea. Next on the list of excellence was the food. Using only locally sourced ingredients and making everything on the premises, including the ice cream, chef Jayne is a master of her craft. The menu offered generous portions of everything from light lunch dishes to hearty meals, with plenty of options for vegetarians.

I started with garlic and onion soup - perfectly pitched - while my wife chose the rather decadent garlic-fried mushrooms. My main course was a British classic: a rich and chunky beef stew and dumplings. Executed to a tee, the dumplings displayed a light and fluffy centre and crisp surface. Everything, down to the peas and new potatoes, was carefully prepared and served. My wife's cheese and tangy tomato pizza was also a success. We couldn't resist dessert, which for me was vanilla ice cream - homemade, of course - and for her a generously filled lemon drizzle cake. Offering an exemplary lunchtime experience, Old Riverview Guest House & Tea Room shows there's still very much a place for simple tasty food and personal service
