Battle Axes

Pubs and Bars with Restaurants

0.5 miles
Butterfly Lane, Elstree, Borehamwood, WD6 3AD
Tucked away on a crossroads at the end of a long country lane, Battle Axes is a large family-friendly pub owned by Punch Taverns.

Managed by Karen Legg, and ably assisted by her very helpful staff, Battle Axes offers a warm welcome and serves food all day every day from noon. Its discreet location away from the bustle of nearby Radlett, and Elstree makes the pub an ideal country hideaway.

The ambience is relaxed, and diners can eat in either the bar/restaurant area or the non-smoking conservatory. The restaurant caters for 160, and there is a large car park.

The menu is comprehensive and reasonably priced with a wide range of popular choices, plus bar snacks and daily specials. Wines are good value, mostly at under £10 a bottle and there is of course a good selection of ales. There is a Young Diners Menu for under 12s and children under 16 are welcome at Battle Axes until 9.30pm.

I chose a starter of mussels in garlic and white wine sauce, followed by Spanish chicken while my hungry male companion opted for traditional prawn cocktail and an enormous man-sized mixed grill, piled high with steak, gammon, sausages, chicken, fried egg, and chips. For dessert, we shared the brownie and fruit skewers with ice cream and a slice of caramelised peach cheesecake.

The popular roasts are available all day Sunday and served with all the trimmings - ideal for all the family.
