If you normally avoid hotel restaurants then you should make an exception for the Cavendish. The Tudor-style building of the Corus Hotel Elstree offers excellent modern European food in a traditional English setting.

The restaurant's oak panelling and ornate wooden carvings help generate an atmosphere of old-style sophistication. The feeling of calm is enhanced by the hotel's landscaped gardens and ten acres of natural woodland.

The head chef, Nicolas Robic, is supported by a largely French cooking staff. They use fresh non-GM ingredients to create a relatively small but diverse selection of dishes, each beautifully presented and rich in flavour and texture. Their efforts are supported by a team of enthusiastic and attentive waiters.

At the time of our visit there were five starters (£5.50 to £6.95) and six main courses (£13.50 to £19.50). These offer something for all tastes and demonstrate the chef's adventurous spirit and enviable understanding of how to combine diverse ingredients. The wine list should suit all tastes and budgets. If you are able, save some space for dessert; even ardent traditionalists will enjoy the modern twist to the sticky toffee pudding.

The restaurant is non-smoking. The hotel's bar - the Edgewarebury - is adjacent for pre-dinner drinks or perhaps an after-dinner cognac and a chance to savour the panoramic views of London from the terrace.
