Named after the much-loved literary classic and filled with homely warmth and charm, the Oliver Twist is a truly traditional English inn with a fresh, modern outlook. Located on the boundaries of Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, there are rich pickings when it comes to locally sourced ingredients, so the food is a far cry from the workhouse.

I started with homemade ravioli - each parcel was filled with rich beef, chunky butternut squash or irresistible duxelle, topped with a tangy tomato sauce and perfected with sharp bites of Parmesan. My partner opted for the salted corned beef, which was full of flavour and served with creamy Dijon mustard and hot, crunchy toast.

While my partner then went on to sample the chorizo and tomato tagliatelle, I had learned that all their steak and beef dishes come from Longhorn cattle reared at nearby Wicken Fen and consequently decided to go for the popular steak and ale pie. The quality of the meat was immediately apparent and complemented by deliciously buttery pastry.

Dessert was Eton Mess - an exquisite explosion of vanilla-flavoured Chantilly cream, homemade Pavlova and sumptuous strawberries. It was the ideal end to a meal that managed to be contemporary and timeless all at once - the epitome of glorious food.
