Alvaros has been providing its customers with the highest quality Portuguese and European food since 1977. This cosy little restaurant has a wonderfully relaxed ambience. The staff are exceptionally helpful and genuinely friendly, offering full silver service and lighting flambé dishes theatrically at your table. The vast à la carte menu features dishes prepared from scratch using the freshest ingredients. The menu offers a wide variety of hot and cold starters, as well as a selection of soups, which makes choosing what to have a decidedly difficult affair. The lulas a Portuguesa was a particular favourite of mine - skewers of tender baby squid and chorizo grilled with garlic and chilli. Main courses present an extensive array of seafood, duck and chicken dishes, as well as beautifully tender steaks. Alvaros can cater for large groups, and a Friday lunchtime menu is available between midday and 2pm. Just remember to book well in advance, as this long-established Portuguese gem is very popular.
