The Henny Swan is surrounded by farmland in the heart of Constable Country and set beside the River Stour. Both the picturesque setting and superb food make it well worth a detour on any outing to nearby Dedham or Flatford. The River Stour Trust offers weekend cruises between Sudbury and The Henny Swan; alternatively you can explore the river and enjoy the views on a boat trip embarking from the pub's own grounds.

In winter, it would be difficult to tear yourself away from the lovely open fire in the panelled bar - the service from the knowledgeable and attentive team led by the award-winning management couple, Lee and Sian Clark, is as cosseting as the setting. The extensive bar menu continues the theme of comfort, proffering soup, pies, light bites, specialities and classics, plus daily specials. The Gainsborough Restaurant has been extensively refurbished and combines country-house style with a sense of theatrical flair. In spring and summer the restaurant's French doors can be thrown open, linking the dining room with the marquee and outdoor dining area for corporate events and weddings. For more casual visits, like family lunches and evening meals, the riverside beer garden and play area are great.

The à la carte menu offers four options for each course, allowing for frequent updates and seasonal variations. The dishes we sampled were perfectly balanced and beautifully presented. The starter of pulled confit of chicken combined the flavours of tarragon with a hint of smoked pepper oil for added interest. My companion opted for a roasted shallot tarte aux fine on a crisp base topped with Brie and a drizzle of garlic-and-chilli-infused oil - wonderful. The main courses were as generous as they were tasty. Sea bass fillets sitting atop a tower of crushed new potatoes and wilted spinach were complemented by a beurre blanc subtly flavoured with dill. My companion's 28-day-dry-aged Hereford steak was perfectly pink and moist. The red wine reduction was smooth and sweet and every last drop was mopped from the serving board using the chunky hand-cut chips with which it was served.

We finished with a traditional steamed pudding of spotted dick with syrup and custard and a spiced fruit parfait with brandy cream. You could say we came to a Sticky End - the name of the light, honeyed and floral dessert wine. Our meal at The Henny Swan was delicious from start to finish
