The Woodbine

0.5 miles
Honey Lane, Waltham Abbey, EN9 3QT

Situated on the edge of Epping Forest, The Woodbine offers home-cooked traditional food accompanied by an extensive wine list. Winner of the CAMRA Cider Pub of East Anglia 2017 and finalist for Cider Pub of the Year, The Woodbine is run by passionate owner Rob Chapman. Rob has devised a varied menu, showcasing the best local produce. Ale is brewed in his own micro-brewery and pork and beef are sourced from a nearby farm, so quality is guaranteed.

The menu features a wide choice of homemade dishes alongside an ever-changing specials board. I sampled shredded chilli beef, followed by liver and bacon, while my partner enjoyed whitebait, followed by a 28-day-matured rib-eye steak.  The beef was appetising, and the liver was perfectly cooked, with caramelised onions adding sweetness. The whitebait was crispy and the rib-eye excellent, perfectly cooked and sumptuously tender. We found room for the homemade ice cream to finish. The rum and raisin, made with Captain Morgan’s rum, was rich and boozy – a real winner. All of the dishes were superbly fresh, reflecting the team’s dedication to providing traditional food using locally sourced ingredients. An extensive list of drinks including local cider, ale and stout, as well as ample gin and wine, mean there are plenty of potable options to accompany your meal.

There’s no better spot to call in at than The Woodbine, whether you’re seeking refreshment after a walk in the forest or are just in the mood for a great meal and a top-notch atmosphere.
