If you happen to find yourself in Essex with a hankering for a juicy steak, you're in luck. Whether you're looking to refuel after a busy day's shopping in Harlow, longing for a leisurely lunch before a round of golf in Ilford, or escaping to the coast or countryside for a little food and fresh air, you'll never be too far from one of Miller & Carter's fabulous steakhouses. Miller & Carter have breathed new life into some of the most beautiful countryside pubs, restoring them with sympathy yet bringing them right up to date with contemporary furnishings and facilities. It's not just the picturesque surroundings that bring people back to these restaurants time and time again - the food is great too. Offering a splendid selection of premium, succulent and flavoursome steaks, as well as a whole host of other equally tempting dishes, Miller & Carter really is a cut above the rest.

Blessed with a picturesque location just five miles outside bustling Romford, The Camelot in Lambourne End is the perfect countryside retreat. With rolling hills to the west and Hainault Forest Country Park opposite, there's no shortage of space for a pre or post-lunch stroll. Grab a table outside if the weather is fine, and tuck into an 8oz sirloin steak with oyster and shitake mushrooms, crispy bacon and a blue cheese and mushroom sauce.

The Dick Turpin, if you believe tales told by regulars, was once frequented by the inimitable highwayman himself. Sip a pint of London Pride and forget your troubles - your only problem will be deliberating over the menu, which includes smoky barbecue chicken, fish and chips, burgers, salads and, of course, steaks. The Dick Turpin is delightful - unlike its wayward namesake - and certainly deserves a visit.

If you're lucky enough to live in Leigh-on-Sea, you'll no doubt be familiar with The Silver Jubilee. And if you're visiting the pretty coastal town for a little rest and relaxation, you can't go wrong with a visit to this handsome hostelry. Let the sea air inspire you and order sea bass with a tangy tomato, coriander and basil dressing, or treat yourself to a 14oz T-bone steak that's been aged on the bone for 28 days for extra succulence and flavour.

The friendly atmosphere of The Gatekeeper is the perfect setting for any occasion. Exposed brickwork and black leather couches give the place a New-York-loft feel, and the menu provides the same delicious dishes found in all Miller & Carter restaurants. If you feel like pretending you're lunching in the US capital, you can make like a Yank and order an American burger - loaded with gherkins, American mustard and tomato salsa. So for premium steaks and grills, as well as a whole host of other delicious dishes, look no further than Miller & Carter - surely the best steakhouses for miles around.
