As you enter this grand country house you will feel you have discovered something rather special. Easily accessible from the main road, yet set in 22 acres of beautiful grounds, Mulberry House is the perfect venue for any event. From a light lunch or dinner, to a weekend away, wedding or retreat, Mulberry House can cater to your needs.

After being greeted kindly, diners are invited to sink into a comfortable armchair in the lounge, which is the perfect place to browse the menu while sipping a drink. Nothing is rushed here - time seems to stand still as you succumb to the peaceful atmosphere, lulled by soft music and the gentle tick-tock of the clock. Chefs are happy to cater for dietary requirements, however specific. Regular diners and guests are invited to order exactly what they would like - as long as it's a day or two in advance - even if it is not on the menu.

Spencer, the head chef, who is clearly passionate about the dishes he creates, was delighted to talk me through the menu and stressed the importance he attaches to the sourcing of local, seasonal produce. I opted for the duck and apple terrine, served with a generous amount of homemade fig chutney, while my friend enjoyed the Thai-style tiger prawns. We continued with succulent pork tenderloin on chorizo mashed potato and pheasant with parsnip chips - both served with fresh vegetables.

Despite feeling very full after the generous but beautifully presented starters and mains, we couldn't resist ordering dessert. I plumped for the sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce - surprisingly light with a good smattering of dates. I was reliably informed that the Belgian waffle with banana and vanilla pod ice cream was equally delicious. Specials that night included pea soup with mint cream and fish pie and, at £18.50 for two-courses and £23 for all three, the price was as attractive as the setting.
