Nestled at the top of York Hill in Loughton, you'll find the small but very well presented Gardeners Arms. With Epping Forest just metres away from its front door, it's hard to believe that this quaint olde-worlde pub is just ten miles away from London; you can even catch a glimpse of Canary Wharf standing tall in the distance, which is a far cry from the leafy forest and grassy knoll surrounding the building. It doesn't get much better than this.

Everything about this traditional English pub, with its brightly coloured hanging baskets outside, is truly charming, and the welcome we received on arrival was warm and friendly. We immediately spotted the blackboards, bearing a host of enticing dishes, and we knew that we'd have some difficult decisions to make.

After a refreshing aperitif outside, we retreated back inside to the restaurant, where we dived into our hearty starters of prawn cocktail, with deliciously meaty prawns, and rich and flavoursome paté on toast. Our mains swiftly followed: my cod, in very delicate batter, was lightly crisp and the fish tasted incredibly fresh. The chips and salad complemented my light lunch perfectly, and left me feeling more than satisfied. My companion's calamari with chilli jam were melt-in-the-mouth tender and he clearly enjoyed every mouthful.

The presentation of every dish was immaculate, the service was attentive and professional, and we really didn't want our visit to end. Although we were filling up, we couldn't resist plumping for a tempting dessert each - and it was this last course that really stole the show. The deliciously decadent treacle sponge pudding with a pot of hot, creamy custard was nothing short of heavenly, and the rice pudding with jam and cream was a winner, too
