The Catherine Wheel
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
Pelham Road, Gravesend, Albury, SG11 2LW
Situated in a picturesque hamlet in Albury, and surrounded by beautiful walks, The Catherine Wheel is a delightful pub and restaurant with a welcoming atmosphere and a real community feel. With a major refurbishment under its belt, the venue boasts a stylish and comfortable interior throughout. A wonderful garden, equipped with a children's play area complete with undercover sandpit, confirms just what a family-friendly place The Catherine Wheel is. Clearly this is somewhere run with passion and enthusiasm. The bar boasts an impressive selection of ales and yummy homemade snacks, and in the restaurant, good home cooking and fresh, seasonal ingredients are key. The accomplished chefs have devised a wonderfully original menu, and even tried-and-tested favourites have been given a little twist. We were keen to sample the smoked pigeon, beetroot and horseradish tian with walnut and thyme dressing. It was quite a work of art, and offered a great combination of flavours that really complemented each other. The duck liver parfait with red onion and thyme jam was also delicious and of perfect consistency. As a main, my partner had the slow-roasted pork belly. Here, the kitchen team outdid themselves; the pork was so tender that a knife wasn't really necessary. This was paired with fantastic black pudding fritters and the crispiest of crackling. I was tempted by the mushroom risotto arancini after seeing a fellow diner's plate, however, the daily special of sea bass fillets won my vote and came served on a tangy bed of stir-fried Oriental veg. Puddings included a wonderful lime cheesecake with an oozing chocolate centre and an inventive cardamom and saffron pannacotta. The restaurant has an additional private dining area, ideal for intimate gatherings and business lunches. Afternoon cream teas are in the offing, and, with such a warm welcome, great food and lovely facilities for children, it's easy to see why this is such a popular haunt for the local families of Albury. It's big enough to share though, and I for one will certainly be spreading the word and returning with friends.
