Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
43 High Street, Swaffham Prior, CB25 0LD
The Red Lion is a delightful family-run pub in Swaffam Prior, ably run by husband and wife Toni and David. On entering the 14th-century oak-beamed building on a chilly day, we were welcomed by a warming log fire and settled into the cosy surrounds. From the selection of pub classics and modern British dishes, we began with French onion soup of the day with a cheesy baguette and a gorgeous smoked salmon special with dressed salad. To follow, my braised lamb shank fell off the bone, while the halibut with prawns and spring-onion cream sauce was exquisite. The new potatoes, leeks in mustard sauce and fresh cauliflower and broccoli were the perfect accompaniments. Portions were generous, but desserts were too good to miss so we shared a naughty sticky toffee pudding with double cream. Upbeat background music and friendly service added to the relaxed atmosphere, and the fun memorabilia decorating the walls is a nice touch. The proprietors also host quiz nights, darts evenings and fundraising events.
