Located beside the peaceful River Ouse in Ely, The Cutter Inn offers a cosy, traditional bar and delightful contemporary dining area. Its name is derived from a type of sailing vessel similar to a longboat, so this riverside pub carries a nautical theme throughout - with the restaurant even styled to resemble the galley of a boat. Off-white wicker chairs, wooden panelling and glass patio doors complement the maritime feel.

Having now visited a few of the pubs owned by the TLC group, I can confi rm that this small chain - made up of a handful of establishments - consistently prioritises the quality of its food and the care of its customers. The Cutter Inn was named East Anglia's 'Best Managed Pub' in 2011 so we were glad to find the team upholding their high standards on our visit. Service was brilliant - our attentive waitress demonstrated a good understanding of the menu and recommended deep-fried whitebait to start, followed by aromatic duck salad, while my partner opted for duck, then pan-fried sea bass fi llets on a bed of wilted spinach with lemon and vinaigrette. All the food was freshly prepared and beautifully presented. For dessert, we shared a generous portion of warm cinnamon waffl es with vanilla ice cream and maple syrup - wonderfully sweet without being sickly.

The menu at The Cutter Inn is extensive, featuring classic pub dishes, pastas and chef specials as well as vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes. The team proudly sources local ingredients where possible, and all the meat served is British, while at the bar there are regularly rotated ales, including local brews from Norfolk. The restaurant hosts regular special events too - I'd recommend checking their website to see what's on.

The Cutter Inn is a splendid place to catch up with friends or family, especially in the summer months when you can sit outside by the river. The inn enjoys a diverse mix of clientele, including a particularly distinctive group of feathery, beaked locals. These are well-known to the regulars, and commute past the pub every morning, waddling back again in the evening - a charming sight to behold. See if you can spot this loyal family of ducks out on their daily stroll, when you visit.
