Owner Mohammed Ackram knows a thing or two about Indian cuisine and how to make guests feel at home. He and his family have been running the Raja Tandoori Restaurant since 1989 and, for almost as long, the chef has been refining his own recipes and producing treasured dishes, which are enjoyed by many loyal regular diners and newcomers alike.

Stumbling across the unassuming exterior of this restaurant, the glow from the large windows is sure to draw you in and, once inside, the greeting you receive is friendly, family-orientated and as warm as the spices you will savour. Waiters are known to regulars by their first names, and staff are familiar enough with some guests to have nicknames - the rapport surrounds even debut diners and makes everyone feel part of the family. The attention to detail is patent; crisp, cream linen napkins are folded in fan shapes alongside spirit burners used to heat individual dishes at each table. The restaurant is capable of seating 40 people at one sitting, and each delicious plate comes freshly made from the kitchen. This Indian restaurant is not one that has confined itself to the cuisine of a specific region of India; instead it caters for all tastes and, with the chef cooking everything to order, if you want something different you only have to ask. All the classic Indian favourites are on the menu, including tandoori, masala, jalfrezi, korai, balti and biriyani to name but a few. Popular dishes among diners include khati mithi - chicken cooked in a sweet and sour sauce - or Bengal jafrani, which comprises chicken and lamb tikka served in a medium hot sauce.

Having thought of everything, the Ackram family will arrange a takeaway for you and even deliver within a five-mile radius of the restaurant. If eating in, it is advisable to reserve a table, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. If you're looking for a warm-hearted atmosphere and authentic Indian food at reasonable prices, Raja is the tandoori restaurant for you.
