With the sea breeze in your hair and lapping tides at your feet, there can only be one thing on your mind – seafood. Thankfully, you’ll find West Mersea Oyster Bar beside the water’s edge, offering plenty to satisfy your craving for deep-sea delights. Head chef Chris Avila (chef profile page $$) and Sel Yuzen took over in 2010 – having worked here since 2008 and 2007 respectively – and have really made their mark. Despite creating a new and refreshed interior, Chris and Sel have managed to retain the simple, homely feel the eatery is known for. The restaurant will happily seat 50 people, but if it’s a sunny day I recommend pulling up a pew in their extended outside seating area. With space to seat 100 people, there will always be a spot for you overlooking the water – the perfect place to savour the same fresh Mersea oysters that are delivered to top London restaurants.
Open throughout the year, these guys only take a break on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. They also cater for private parties during the evenings that the restaurant is closed to the public, and can provide delicious seafood banquets for outside events. Hot food and seafood are always available to take away – and at a slightly reduced cost to boot. So, if you love seafood and sun, get settled, make your choice (the platters come highly recommended) and relax.
