It is safe to say that Perry Wilson, owner of the Rose & Crown in Great Horkesley, has succeeded in his aim to offer fantastic drink and top-quality food in homely, laid-back surroundings. Situated just two miles from Nayland, close to the Suffolk border, the rural setting and pretty backdrop of the Rose & Crown set the scene for a superb drinking and dining experience.

The beauty of this 17th-Century establishment continues inside, where you will find grand beams, open fires and real-wood tables. Everything from the inviting, comfortable decor to the exquisite glassware and crockery (which wouldn't look out of place in the finest London restaurant) has been carefully considered; the reading glasses on every table provide an extra-special touch.

As you might expect, the brand-new menu has been as well thought-out as the surroundings. Comprising a selection of homemade, modern British dishes, the menu here is hard to beat and, whether you choose to eat in the rustic bar or the charming restaurant, the warm atmosphere and excellent service will enhance your evening. What's more, the meat is local and the vegetables couldn't be fresher; they come from the owner's own farm, along with the duck and chicken eggs. A fine selection of starters includes a black-pudding Scotch egg with picked baby vegetables and honey creme fraiche, while one of the many highlights of the mains selection is the homesmoked partridge and wild duck pie with purple sprouting broccoli and red wine gravy. From the selective wine list, which includes over 40 wines (most available by the glass), the Lebanese red, with a nice body, will make the perfect match for this gamey dish. Finally, a well-executed British classic of homemade spotted dick, with creamy custard of course, will make the perfect dessert.

Seasonal cocktails are prepared from scratch every day - the Rose & Crown Bellini and the Gooseberry Mojito are truly sensational - and there is always at least one real ale and one real cider available at the bar. In addition, four-legged friends and children are most welcome; there's even a dedicated menu for little ones, which offers the same high standards of good, honest cooking and features the likes of fi sh fingers made from scratch and homemade beans (children are not permitted in the restaurant after 6pm)
