The Whalebone boasts a tranquil rural location in the Roman River Valley, complete with lawns rolling down to the water. Both outside and in, it's a quintessential English pub, with a gorgeous Georgian frontage, solid-wood floors and dramatic oak beams. Gastropub fare is the order of the day here and everything is prepared using fresh British ingredients. The menu changes regularly, but a three-course meal might begin with a hearty haggis Scotch egg, followed by pancetta wrapped chicken filled with creamy ricotta, and rounded off with a melt-in-the-middle chocolate fondant (see website for up-to-date menus). The Whalebone has also become a destination for steak lovers, thanks to its succulent 35-day-matured British steaks. Drinkers and diners are made to feel equally welcome, and behind the bar you'll find up to four real ales and lagers, in addition to the selective wine list, featuring wines from local suppliers
