This former traditional country pub has been totally transformed into a modern gastropub and restaurant, thanks to new owners. The building's striking glass and timber-clad facade immediately excites interest. The stylish interior continues to impress but pays homage to the building's historical past by retaining original features. Oak beams that once supported an upper fl oor now frame an open apex, from which large sculptural lampshades hang. The result is a wonderful mix of old and new.
My friend and I chose ham hock terrine served on a slate platter with rye bread and homemade piccalilli, and fresh carrot and coriander soup with croutons and delicate salad leaves - the attention to detail was clear. Tender saddle of lamb accompanied by onion purée and pickled red cabbage followed, cementing our conclusion that there is a fine chef at work behind the scenes. The house salad was a hearty medley of goat's cheese, quail's egg, avocado and walnuts, with each mouthful revealing a new adventure of texture and flavour. The Tia Maria creme brulée with shortbread and chocolate sorbet was as delicious as its picture-perfect presentation promised. I'm told the traditional Sunday roast is fast becoming a local must-have.
