The Varsity Restaurant was established in 1954 by the present owner Bernard's Cypriot father and French mother, and this vibrant cultural mix has greatly influenced the food served there. One of the oldest restaurants in Cambridge, it has become something of an institution by consistently maintaining high standards in everything from the hearty food to the friendly service. The dishes are a mixture of Cypriot and French with a medley of other influences and everything is freshly made daily on the premises. The portions are generous and you'll be guaranteed to leave The Varsity feeling pleasantly full. You can eat in the warm and inviting restaurant area or, if you're celebrating a special occasion, there are two additional rooms upstairs that can cater for private parties. The kalamaraki (deep-fried squid rings) and the loucanico (Greek sausages served with tzatziki) are two very tasty ways to begin your meal at The Varsity and the main courses to follow certainly don't disappoint either. There are fish and chicken dishes, popular, reasonably priced full set menu mezzes, Cypriot specialities, plenty of vegetarian options and charcoal grills available. A favourite dish is the kleftico, which is only served in the evenings and features tender lamb that has been cooked slowly with oregano. The dessert menu boasts tempting favourites like tiramisu, creme brulée and white chocolate cheesecake - each one is a perfect way to end an evening. A great-value restaurant with a friendly atmosphere, it is easy to see why The Varsity Restaurant is still around after over 50 years. Long may its success continue
