In a picturesque location overlooking Parker's Piece, in a building that was once a cricket pavilion, sits Mai Thai, a restaurant known as the go-to place for exquisite Thai cuisine. Everything is freshly prepared by expert Thai chef Saiyam, who uses the finest ingredients and fresh herbs flown in weekly from Thailand to create authentic dishes.

To start, we shared a generous platter, which included Thai fishcakes, vegetable spring rolls, chicken satay and crispy noodles with a piquant tamarind sauce. We then both enjoyed a bowl of fragrant tom ka soup with lemongrass and coconut. For mains, I eagerly tucked into gai yang - succulent pieces of barbecued Thai chicken with herbs, fresh chilli and lime, and zingy coconut rice served in a half shell. My partner was equally pleased with his main course of gaeng dang curry- tender beef with coconut milk, sweet basil leaves, sweet potato and mixed peppers, accompanied by fragrant steamed rice and rice noodles.

After such a feast, we barely had room for dessert, but were nevertheless tempted by Mai Thai's selection. I chose raspberry and strawberry, and mango and passion fruit sorbets, while my partner was in dessert heaven thanks to the Thai coconut rolls: coconut wrapped in a pandan-leaf pancake, served with vanilla ice cream. With lovely views across the green and a warm, contemporary interior, I can't think of a better setting for a delicious Thai meal than Mai Thai
