The Halfway House
This family-run venue prides itself on delivering personal service, quality food and a friendly welcome. Look past The Halfway House’s modest pub exterior and step into an attractive home away from home. A warm, snug bar leads on to a large, light and airy restaurant with garden views and friendly staff.
We ordered a generous prawn cocktail with fl avoursome Marie Rose sauce, and battered prawns with chilli sauce. So sweet and succulent are the prawns that regular diners often order a larger portion as a main course. My husband’s beer-battered cod came with perfectly cooked chunky chips and salad. I opted for a mouth-watering steak, which was perfectly seasoned and cooked exactly as requested. Feeling greedy, we couldn’t resist a sizeable banana sundae, which comprised a mountain of whipped cream, ice cream, fruit and smashed honeycomb, and a sticky toffee pudding with creamy custard. Our meals exceeded expectations, and we saw huge beefburgers receive a rapturous welcome from the table next to us. There really is nothing better than enjoying a delicious, attractively priced meal, served with a smile.
A huge private area boasts an all-weather marquee that can cater for up to 500 guests. Perfect for weddings, this area has a large secluded garden backing onto Thorndon Park, its own bar, restrooms and entrance. The team caters for all budgets and can adapt arrangements to suit your needs. A smaller, but equally stylish event room in the main building can hold a respectable 150 guests.
