108 High Street, Brentwood, CM14 4AP
As we entered the Red Frog on Brentwood High Street, we found ourselves surrounded by warm colours and vases of gorgeous fresh tulips. We soon set about perusing an appetising menu - including a number of vegetarian options - of dishes cooked to order using fine ingredients. My tasty starter of spinach, onion and potato soup, which arrived with croutons and a swirl of cream, was beautifully presented, as was my companion's choice of mixed game, roast garlic and tarragon terrine with onion chutney. For mains, we opted for grilled polenta with balsamic onions, ratatouille and smoked butter sauce; this arrived alongside a superb lamb dish. Slow-cooked for 24 hours then pan-fried and served with celeriac purée, this really was a cut above. Those with a sweet tooth are sure to appreciate classics such as the lemon posset and delicious brioche bread and butter pudding. Roast dinners are available on Sundays for £9.95, afternoon tea is served Wednesday to Saturday between 2.30pm and 5pm (advance bookings only), and there's a great mid-week fixed menu offering two courses for £15.95 and three for £19.95. The monthly themed food evenings and wine and dine evenings are also not to be missed. If you're looking for a special gift, why not enquire about the personalised Red Frog vouchers?
