Hidden away on a quiet side road just off Brentwood High Street, the Da Vinci is about as authentic a Sicilian restaurant as you'll find this side of the Mediterranian Sea. Executive chef Salvatore Farruggia hails from the island's capital, Palermo, as do the rest of his family, who run the kitchen and front of house at this welcoming establishment, which is equally suitable for a dinner for two as a family meal.

The menu has a particular focus on seafood, which features in half of the dishes in the starter section. It's all fresh and used in imaginative ways, such as in the caponata di pescespada (sweet and sour swordfi sh with onions, olives and celery). I opted for the burrata con salmone (buffalo mozzarella with pistachios, honey and smoked salmon), which is worth trying for the burrata alone (fresh cheese made of mozzarella and cream) - according to Salvatore, this is often ordered twice in one sitting, and I can see why. My partner's deep-fried squid, a real Italian favourite, was perfectly crisp and served on a bed of fresh salad with homemade tartar sauce.

The selection of mains continues in same spirit, with a variety of inventive pasta dishes. My fellow diner's porchetta ragu with egg pasta was rich and full of flavour. Although I was tempted by the seared duck breast with orange sauce and steamed pak choi, I plumped for the rack of lamb with thyme and rosemary breadcrumbs and mustard crust - and I certainly didn't regret it. As for the fish dishes, we noticed the seafood plates served at adjacent tables were almost overflowing with seared cod fillet and mussels, clams and king prawns, grilled tuna, swordfish, squid and king prawns. For something a bit lighter, you can always select something from the generous selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian salads.

The choice of desserts is currently being expanded, but we were thrilled with our moist and zesty Sicilian lemon cake and a naughty sticky toffee pudding with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream. There's also a broad range of refreshing sorbets to cleanse your palate
