The Royal Oak
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
High Street, Collingham, Newark, NG23 7LB
This traditional village restaurant cooks hearty British food in picturesque surroundings, making it not only the best place to go for a pint, but also the best place for celebrations or romantic meals. Hit with a tempting aroma as soon as you enter, you'll want to order everything on the menu. I chose king prawns in a Pernod sauce to start - melt-in-the-mouth morsels with the anise flavour adding extra kick. My companion dived into the homemade soup of the day, which was chunky and perfect for dipping crusty bread. For my main course, the duck on a bed of Morrello cherry sauce was mouth-wateringly succulent and served with delicious seasonal vegetables. The steak and Stilton cheese dish also looked divine - I found my fork wandering throughout the evening to sample my companion's choices. For dessert, the white chocolate cheesecake was a naughty little piece of heaven, perhaps the best I've ever had. I plan to return for The Royal Oak's monthly seafood evening, where delights such as sea bass, sea bream and Mediterranean mussels, as well as seasonal treats such as monkfish and swordfish, are the stars of the show. To accompany the menu, an extensive wine list offers options by the glass and bottle. The atmosphere here is formal yet relaxed, with exposed wooden beams and comfy chairs creating a warm and cosy feel. The service throughout the evening was exceptional and, with The Royal Oak offering outside catering too, I'm sure I will find one, if not many, occasions to call on this fantastic team.
