The Swan Inn
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
Coggeshall Road, Bradwell, Braintree, CM77 8ED
Situated just outside Braintree, this charming grade-ll-listed 15th-Century restaurant began life as an old coach house. With a roaring fire and a head chef previously employed at Buckingham Palace, a superb culinary journey is guaranteed when dining at The Swan Inn. This local restaurant is renowned for its quality cuisine, and we couldn't wait to see what all the fuss was about. Basking in the glow of an open log fire, we chose from an excellent and varied à la carte menu, which frequently changes with the seasons and availability of vegetables and local meats. To begin, we opted for the carrot and coriander soup, which was delicate and aromatic, and the French onion and Roquefort tart - deliciously tangy and crumbly. For the main course, I enjoyed the braised lamb shank with a piquant sun-dried tomato gravy and fresh seasonal vegetables. The lamb was impeccably cooked, falling off the bone. My companion plumped for the sea perch wrapped in Parma ham, which was equally appetising, and served with spaghetti in white wine sauce. For dessert, we enjoyed jam steamed pudding, which was surprisingly light and simply packed with fruit, and a slice of red wine and chocolate cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. This was an unforgettable dining experience, and one I hope to be repeating in the not-too-distant future.
