Greenstead Farm’s café and restaurant offer wholesome food and a space of comfort to Halstead visitors and residents. The gorgeous Grade II listed barn was built in 1640, with the original thatched roof replaced in the 1930s, and a final conversion of the barn to its current state taking place in 2006.

Today, the stunning structure has been newly thatched with a unique pattern along the roof ridge, and has ample natural light in the daytime thanks to the large wood-framed windows. In the restaurant, all of the knowledgeable chefs are dedicated to sourcing from carefully selected local suppliers. The menu is innovative, taking inspiration from time-old recipes and British favourites. Breakfasts offer much-needed nourishment first thing in the morning – try a very special sausage sandwich, made with Cumberland sausage and a spread of tangy apple and raisin chutney. Reinvigorating a lunchtime staple, the open ciabattas come in a range of topping combinations, such as Stilton, pickled grapes and celery with sugared walnuts. Traditional sandwiches are also available, alongside comforting jacket potatoes and an impressive ploughman’s lunch. Pre-book for afternoon tea, which is presented in an impressive tower of cakes in finger-sized bites.

Open to everyone, the venue has non-slip stone paving with underfloor heating and ramps from the shop to the garden dining space. There is also a fantastic indoor educational play area to make the experience equally enjoyable for children and adults.
