The Pheasant & Borley Smokery
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
Church Street, Gestingthorpe, CO9 3AU
Hearty gastropub dining and charming interiors dating back to the 1500s make this a very cosy bolt-hole, especially during the winter months. In summer, the view from the garden (where owners Diana and James Donoghue grow the vegetables for their dishes) is beautiful, and dining alfresco is an absolute must. Seasonal specials include game pies and rabbit stews made from locally sourced meat. And keep an eye out for James' home-smoked delicacies, including scallops and meats from the Borley Smokery, available to eat in the pub or take away to be enjoyed at home. First out of the kitchen was a grilled slice of goat's cheese served with sweet chilli sauce and a green leaf and beetroot salad. I opted for the stuffed mushrooms with a Parmesan crumb filling, which proved a light entrée and perfectly paved the way for a hearty main course of cod loin in beer batter with chips and mushy peas. My companion opted for the local Spaynes Hall bangers with mash, vegetables and gravy. With just enough space for pudding, I ordered the banana and toffee pancakes with honeycomb ice cream and toasted almonds. My companion favoured the surprisingly light chocolate brownie with Hadley's creamy chocolate ice cream. For those that struggle with decision making, the new fixed-price menu is a blessing. The Pheasant's cosy interiors, relaxed dining and great local food will leave you wanting to return, time and time again.
