Gun Hill, Dedham, CO7 6HP

Le Talbooth is an idyllic riverside restaurant on the Essex and Suffolk border. Though mere minutes from main roads, this half-timbered house on the banks of the River Stour seems a million miles away from everywhere. This stunning venue, named after the toll house over the river that separates Essex and Suffolk, perfectly bridges the art of fine dining and outstanding hospitality. Even in the rain, the landscape beyond the leaded windows is lush and inviting; a perfect backdrop for taking time to savour the fine food and wine on offer.

At Le Talbooth the food takes centre stage. Magnificently presented, our starters of poached hen egg and summer truffle, and Talbooth gravadlax offered a pure exploration of tastes. These were followed by the finest roast saddle of venison, sourced from nearby Thetford Forest and garnished with blackberry- and thyme-infused potato pressing.  The fillet of dry-aged Dedham Vale beef, with rosti potato, spinach and Madeira jus was equally impressive. For dessert, the Le Talbooth baba was set with Madagascan vanilla, apple cider and Calvados, while the pecan and chocolate pie rose from a dish set with mango, praline and lemon curd.

Le Talbooth is a timeless slice of fine dining that is sure to delight all the senses. If you fancy a spa break, wedding or house party, Milsom Hotels have an impressive range of other properties that can cater for these, too.
