For a traditional country inn with a modern twist, look no further than The Houblon Inn. One of the oldest hostelries in the county, it has been beautifully restored and many of the original 17th-Century features remain. Even the name of the inn has a wonderful heritage, marking a dedication to Sir John Houblon, the first governor of the Bank of England (look at the back of your £50 notes). The word 'houblon' is also Flemish for 'hop', which is rather fitting considering the wide range of real ales on offer here - the bar is CAMRA accredited.

The Houblon Inn is the perfect country pub all year round. The beamed dining area and bar has a roaring log fire in winter; on sunny days, head out into the pretty garden area to play boules. The food is tailored to suit not only the seasons but also the time of day, with the chalkboards being rewritten twice daily. Local suppliers and produce are used whenever possible, and the array of food on offer includes traditional and modern dishes.

A typical starter could be anything from a delicious honeyed parsnip soup to a warm and hearty salad of chorizo, black pudding, bacon and Jerusalem artichoke. Make the most of Nottinghamshire's great supply of game with a main course of partridge stuffed with apple and sultanas, served with crispy pancetta and a cider jus. If seafood is more to your taste, you can't beat a steaming bowl of mussels with flavours of lemongrass, ginger, chilli and coconut milk, while the risotto with roasted red peppers, tomatoes, toasted pine nuts and Parmesan shavings makes a delectable dish for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. Finish off with a dessert of chocolate and pecan brownies, and you'll be in seventh heaven.

Hosting regular wine tastings, as well as many other events throughout the year, The Houblon Inn enjoys a faithful regular custom. There are even four beautiful guest rooms available for those who find it hard to leave this historic, welcoming and utterly cosy country inn.
