When one of the top country inns in Leicestershire is taken over by a new management team, one might expect a complete change - but not here. Some serious investment, a thoughtful refurb, a new head chef and clever management has subtly improved this already excellent venue, adding to its appeal without losing any of its charm, character or friendliness.

For many years food lovers have been coming from far and wide to sample the legendary delights of The Crown at Tur Langton so Ian Fletcher, the new owner, aims to build on its success by keeping The Crown a traditional 'home from home' pub. He has certainly succeeded. There is something here for everyone - real ales, a spacious 50-cover restaurant, a pool table and live music once a month. With starters all under a fiver, main courses between £8.95 and £14.95, and a luscious list of reasonably priced sweets, a visit here won't break the bank either. You can also treat yourself to a superb Sunday roast, with one, two or three courses from £9.95.

We mulled over the menu while being warmed by the log fire and, after a complimentary pre-starter, we tucked into a 'grazing plate' - a selection of dips and olives with pitta bread and a spicy carrot and coriander soup. For my main course, the roast chicken breast filled with tomato, mozzarella and basil was colourful and cooked to succulent perfection. My guest toyed with ordering steak and ale pie, but was tempted away by the juicy rib-eye steak - a perfect choice for redmeat lovers - served with tomatoes, mushrooms and homemade chips. If you like cheesecake, you just have to try the white chocolate and vanilla offering at The Crown - it's simply the best we've tasted, and we had to restrain from licking the plate clean.

I can't recommend this place highly enough. With its first-rate hospitality, traditional country-pub atmosphere, themed nights and fantastic food - The Crown Inn is well worth a visit. Trust me.
