The Black Bull Inn is situated in Rutland, where the rolling countryside attracts walkers, cyclists, fishermen, and anyone interested in exploring this pretty county. The inn is over 200 years old and is owned by Kevin and Kristy Housley, a friendly couple dedicated to offering a welcoming pub that caters for all. There are often live bands, quizzes, games and curry nights and during the summer there is a classic car and bike meet once a month. Couples, families and friends are all welcome and whether you are just calling in for a pint of traditional ale, some fresh sandwiches, a hearty lunch, afternoon tea or a three-course evening meal, you will not be disappointed. All the food is cooked to order using fresh, locally sourced produce.

A varied lunch menu offers both light snacks and more substantial dishes. My companion was delighted with his choice - a huge piece of the freshest cod covered in crunchy beer batter, fat crispy chips, mushy peas, and tangy tartare sauce. I opted for steak and Theakston ale pie, and delved into a homemade flaky pastry crust; giant chunks of beef nestling in rich, steaming gravy were revealed. The pastry was melt-in-the-mouth, the beef tender and succulent. Fresh seasonal vegetables, cooked to perfection, complemented the dish.

Even though we were almost full, we couldn't resist trying one of Kristy's renowned homemade puddings. My light and fluffy apple and ginger pudding with ice cream was heavenly, and my companion's sticky ginger sponge pudding with freshly grated ginger, a ginger wine and brandy sauce and rhubarb ice cream was a wonderful fusion of taste and texture. There is also a pudding club on the last Friday of the month, where a choice of three main courses is followed by five delicious pudding tasters.

Nothing is too much trouble at the Black Bull Inn and the good-value, tasty home-cooked food and friendly service will delight anyone who chooses to dine there. A real must for both locals and visitors to the area.
