The garden at Castle Cottage Café is surely enchanted. Flower-filled pots, tea lights, candelabra, mirrors, delicate chinaware, lace tablecloths and bunting are everywhere in Rutland Pride Awards' 'Coffee Shop of the Year 2013'. It's a title well deserved by Ruth and her team, whose dedication makes visiting this charming haven a real treat every time.

Open from 8am for breakfast, Castle Cottage Café serves a menu with something to tempt every palate - they have my particular favourite, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on wholemeal toast. At lunchtime, excellent ingredients from the locale are put to good use in homemade soups, warm baguettes and toasties (made using bread from nearby Hambleton Bakery). Seasonal salads and daily specials complete a very tempting line-up. Afternoon tea is unsurprisingly something of a speciality and you can even order the service to your front door. Cakes, scones and sandwiches from Castle Cottage can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home or at the venue of your choosing, complete with chinaware, cake stands and fresh flowers. Events of all types are catered for by this award-winning team, including weddings and christenings.

Once a month, the café becomes the setting for special supper evenings, when three-course meals are served by candlelight. Expect such decadent menus as grilled mackerel fillet with horseradish cream, followed by slow-roasted lamb shank with garlic mash, minted gravy and vegetables, finished with forest fruits chocolate roulade.
